AMEX Platinum Delta SkyMiles card increased 60,000 sign up bonus offer

Another email I received today was an offer for an increased sign up bonus for the American Express Platinum Delta SkyMiles card. The offer is for 60,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express after spending $2,000 or more in eligible purchases with your new Card in the first 3 months of Card Membership.

This offer is set to expire on July 6th, 2016 and just a reminder that this card carries an annual fee of $195 which is not waived the first year. Here are some of the benefits of this card that make the annual fee worth it:

  • Earn up to 13 miles per dollar spent on Delta flights purchased directly with Delta on your Card — that's 2 miles with your Card and up to an additional 11 miles as a SkyMiles member depending on your Medallion status
  • Earn 1 miles per dollar spent for all other purchases
  • Receive a Domestic Main Cabin Companion Certificate each year upon renewal of your Card (just pay for taxes and fees which are no more than $75)
  • Miles Boost, so you can earn up to an additional 20,000 bonus miles and 20,000 MQMs after you spend $50,000 or more in purchases on your Card in a calendar year
  • Pay with Miles, which lets you redeem miles to reduce the cost of eligible Delta tickets (i.e., this 60,000 bonus miles offer can be redeemed for up to $600 towards Delta flights)
  • First checked bag free, also available to others on the same reservation
  • Priority boarding (Zone 1) for you and up to 9 other passengers on same reservation
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Discounted Delta SkyClub access ($29 per person), normally $60 per person
  • Miles never expire

This offer also comes with a $100 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your Card in the first 3 months.

Bottom Line

The current public offer for this card is 35,000 bonus miles and occasionally you'll see an increased offer for up to 50,000 miles so this represents one of the highest sign up bonuses I've seen for this card. Based on the average valuation of Delta SkyMiles of around 1.2-1.4 cents per mile the sign up bonus alone is worth $720-$840 in travel. And that doesn't even take into account the $100 statement credit you'll receive after your first purchase. However, this card does come with an annual fee of $195 and may not be for everyone as SkyMiles aren't the most popular rewards currency out there. It may be worth considering if you live by a Delta hub and are forced to use them on a regular basis.
