The current offer listed on AMEX's website is only for measly 25,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months so this offer is 3 times better. I've heard of offers ranging anywhere from 50,000 up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points in the past but this usually required a higher spending requirement of $10,000 in the first 3 months which is rather hefty and may be difficult to achieve.
A short recap about what the AMEX Business Gold Rewards Card offers includes earning:
3X points on one category of your choice from the list below:
- Airfare purchased directly from airlines
- U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
- U.S. purchases at gas stations
- U.S. purchases for shipping
- U.S. computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers
2X points on the 4 remaining categories
1X points on other purchases
There is an annual fee of $175 which is waived the first year and the first Employee Card also costs $50 but any additional cards are free. So what do you do if you weren't targeted for this offer? Well you can see if you still qualify by using the CardMatch tool that I talked about in an earlier post. This uses a soft pull on your credit so won't affect it and will also let you know about other offers you may be targeted for. Also, you can try your luck by calling American Express directly at (800) 971-6736 or (877) 628-6736 and asking if you were targeted.
Bottom Line
While this offer does seem tempting I am still debating whether to take advantage of it or not. I already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card which offers 2X points on airlines and gas stations and I also have the Chase Business Ink Cash card which covers the other categories so I will not really be benefiting that much. However, the sign up bonus alone is worth roughly $1,500 in travel if you value Membership Rewards points at about 2 cents per point (75,000 x $0.02) so that alone might make it worthwhile. Have you been recently targeted for this increased offer?
